Last year, I wrote a post for a client on Leadership that went mega viral.

1M+ impressions in 1 week.

Mind you, his posts averaged 5,000+ impressions.

Seeing the results, I replicated the exact post on my profile, and guess what?

Not only did it NOT go viral for me, it is one of my worst performing posts ever.

Why is that?

Because this is how the LinkedIn Algorithm works:

“When you post something on LinkedIn, the platform isn't just evaluating the value of your post. It is now also evaluating you — and whether you're an authority in the thing you've posted about.” - Entrepreneur Magazine, 2023.

So, since I don’t post about 'Leadership', although the content was high-value, it didn’t perform well for me as it was NOT my area of authority.

Moreover, my most recent viral post is on “copywriting tips”.

Now that’s a topic I post about ALL the time. I share:

  • Weekly writing tips.

  • My fav copywriting ads.

  • Top copywriting tips, etc.

Additionally, my profile is optimised to suggest I am a copywriting expert:

Services included on my LinkedIn Profile

Therefore, it’s important to define 2-3 core content pillars and optimise your profile with SEO to signal to the algorithm that you are an expert in those specific fields.

“Ok, Fatima, I’ve done that. Now how do I write a VIRAL post?”

How to write a VIRAL LinkedIn post:

I know 3 things that you should consider.

1) The content needs to be HIGH value:

Now this one is too complicated to answer in a single paragraph. Therefore, my best advice is to study content in your niche that performs the best to understand what qualifies as high value. Check out the tool I’ve mentioned below to make this task efficient.

2) The post topic is within your niche:

As I shared above, the Algorithm will not push a high value post from you if it is not within your niche. So, optimise your profile and post content strictly within your niche.

3) It’s NOT a sales post:

Anything BUT a sales post will go viral.

That’s a pretty broad answer because "anything but a sales post" can mean many things. My point here is that if you want reach, profile views, and more eyes on you, then you sometimes have to post “non-salesy” content.

  • Share your story.

  • Post your favourite quote.

  • Talk about your BEST work tips.

  • Hop of a trending topic (within your niche)

This brings me to topic #2.

Majority of the posts performing well on LinkedIn are stories!

Check out a few viral posts I have compiled here:

Did you notice the trend?

  • All text-based stories.

  • Personal experiences.

  • Attention-grabbing hooks.

  • Content topic relevant to the author.

If you takeaway anything from this issue, it should be this:

Share more stories. They connect the best with people.
